You are currently viewing Winter in South Florida

I figured most of us in the month of January would like to travel somewhere warmer than where they are. Some winters I focus my attention on landscape scenes accented with snow. But in south Florida, contrasting the cold months of the northeast winter and lifeless early spring, conditions are ideal for tourism and photography. Weather is pleasantly mild and mostly dry for photographing evening neon street and city scenes or lavish sports cars on Miami’s South Beach (anything that resembles Miami Vice).

Ocean Drive on Miami’s South Beach lends itself to long exposure evening shots during the blue hour. The neon signed hotels between 7th and 8th street bring a colorful punch to an already sunset sky. Colorful clouds west of the beach will enhance these evening photos with all kinds of garish Art-Deco styled action. In the below image, I visited Miami at a time when the Colony Hotel was unfortunately closed and without its signature blue neon beacon. However, the seasonal opportunity of Christmas lights strung on the nearby palm trees allowed me to improvise.

In this case Christmas lights on palm trees offered a seasonal flare

Turning my attention further south during the height of the dry season, South Florida is also home to some fabulous photography at Everglades National Park and several small pocket preserves, all within easy driving distances from Miami. Sanibel Island (bird and landscape photography) can be accessed either from Miami or from an even closer Ft. Myers. In Everglades National Park, the easiest wildlife and my favorite to photograph include large wading birds and alligators.

Even later in the morning when the light is harsher, sometimes pleasing compositions present themselves.

Landscape photography, my favorite, is second to none in South Florida. Although the state is pancake flat, glistening white-sand beaches and marshes dotted by lush hammocks offer ample subjects under the right colorful conditions. When combined under a rising (or setting) sun, landscapes laced in fog and mist can be rewarding for the landscape enthusiast.
